CCHS Scanning Center Receives Oregon Cultural Trust Support for Voices & Maps of Clatsop County 2026
The Clatsop County Historical Society’s Voices & Maps of Clatsop County 2026: A Community Preservation & Workforce Training Initiative has received a major boost with a $14,000 grant from the Oregon Cultural Trust, matched by an additional $14,000 private donor commitment.
These funds will help CCHS expand its Digital Scanning Center through new video preservation tools and large-format scanning equipment for oversized materials such as maps, blueprints, newspapers, and fragile historic documents. This equipment will allow CCHS to preserve materials that are currently difficult or time-consuming to digitize and make more of Clatsop County’s history accessible to the public.
The next phase of the initiative will focus on training students, volunteers, and staff in video editing, digitization, metadata, captioning, and digital preservation workflows. CCHS is also exploring the possibility of hiring a video editing instructor or trainer with experience in Apple Final Cut Pro and Apple Creator Studio tools. This person would help “train the trainers” so CCHS can launch a sustainable 1:1 volunteer participation model.
Under this model, qualified trainees could receive supervised access to professional video editing and preservation equipment for approved educational or personal projects in exchange for matching volunteer hours supporting CCHS preservation work. This approach turns the equipment investment into an ongoing community resource while increasing CCHS’s long-term preservation capacity.
Together, these efforts are designed to preserve at-risk media and documents, expand public access to Clatsop County history, and build a community-based preservation program serving CCHS and regional partner organizations.
How to Support the Project
Community donations are welcome and will help CCHS continue building the training and volunteer development phase of the project. Contributions may support preservation equipment, training, digital storage, video editing workflows, and public access to historic materials. Donations may be made to the Clatsop County Historical Society with a note designating the gift for the Scanning Center or Voices & Maps of Clatsop County 2026.
